Challenges in Mental Health Care for Children

Identifying mental illnesses in children is tricky as it can be difficult to distinguish between signs of a mental health problem and normal childhood behaviour.

Why it matters: Mental Disorders or "Normal Behaviour Variations"

  1. Anxiety disorders, such as separation anxiety and panic disorders, are often seen in younger children who respond to certain things or situations with fear, dread, and nervousness.
  2. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)is a disruptive behavioral disorder which affects a child's attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.
  3. Depression is a very common mood disorder with symptoms such as anger and irritability, social withdrawal, low energy and tiredness, crying, changes in sleep and appetite.
  4. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that impairs a child's communication and social interaction.
  5. Schizophrenia involves distorted perceptions and thoughts, resulting in hallucinations, chaotic behavior and lack of emotional response.
  6. Tic disorders cause a person to perform repeated, sudden, involuntary, and often meaningless movements and sounds, such as chronic tic disorder and tourette syndrome.

Referrals Are Critical

Referrals made by experienced professionals prevent unnecessary waiting time and ensure monitoring of the therapeutic outcome.

First, go to child psychiatrists and developmental pediatricians to conduct professional assessment and confirm diagnosis.

You may also approach neuropsychologists, educational psychologists, clinical psychologists for assessment and behavioral management.

For other common coexisting conditions, you may seek help from learning specialists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, audiologists, child psychologists, etc.
